infosec in the A-T-L? What’s critical mass for such an event, Tom?

Avatar Thomas Ptacek Administator 18 posts

You’d think there’d have to be some. ISS, Rothman, Lancope, probably 10 other companies I’m not thinking of.

AtlantaSec is actually called HotSec though.

Atlanta already has a security meet up organized by Jody Ma Kissling called SIP (Security Industry Professionals, I think). Though I don’t know if they’ve held one in a few months…

Avatar Thomas Ptacek Administator 18 posts

If SIP doesn’t require membership or invitations and is publically announced and open to all comers, it’s Atlanta’s CitySec meetup and we’ll announce it.

Otherwise, someone should absolutely organize an Atlanta CitySec.

All the cities this is happening in have some alternative meeting, but there’s something about all those alternatives that sucks.

I’ll ping Jody and point her at the CitySec forum here. In my experience SIP does not require membership and is open to all – after all, they even let me attend. hah. The weakness might be the public announcement, since it has been word-of-mouth and evite, but I’m sure that can be addressed. The time I went was great. Lots of diversity in companies, security roles, experience, etc.

Thanks, Kymberlee. Atlanta SIP has been dormant for a few months, and now may be the time to revive it. The member list is about 200 strong and is open to anyone affiliated with network security. To whom should I send details for the next gathering?

Avatar KymPossible 9 posts

hey Jody, is it open to anyone affiliated with network security, or computer security in general? I know quite a few product security folks were there the time I came…

This is a good idea. Word to ‘HotSec’. I’m game.

Avatar jodyma 3 posts

Thanks for clarifying. Atlanta SIP is open to anyone affliated with computer security.
Anyone have suggestions for a location? Last time we met at Perimeter’s Taco Mac – but parkings is a bear. Ideas?

Avatar dmitry.chan 8 posts

If we’re throwing out ideas, I like Penang Malaysian at Chamblee-Tucker/Buford Hwy. Downtown, there is Dailey’s Downstairs on International (cigar and martini bar). I, personally, hate going inside the perimeter, so I’m most inclined to come to an event on the North side of town….

I’d love to be involved. Location doesn’t really matter to me. How many attendees did SIP have on average? As for publicizing we can push it out to ISSA, ISACA, and I will post it on my blog.

The Brick Store in downtown Decatur is pretty similar to Brickskellar in DC. I highly recommend it! Rockstar parking can be a bit tight, but within a half block or so there’s tons of free spots.

Avatar dmitry.chan 8 posts

Decatur would be nice :-) You should set a date foQ.

Avatar Beau 13 posts

How about if we start next month off with a bang—how’s Wednesday, August 1 at 6pm work in everybody’s schedule? I’ll check with the guys at The Brick Store to see if they can accommodate us. Anybody have a guess as to how many participants we’ll draw. I’m going to go with somewhere around 15-20, but I could be completely off. What does the Atlanta SIP typically draw, jodyma? Also, what typically goes on at these events? Is there an agenda or is it just a chance to chat it up with fellow IT Security pros?

We’ll never get consensus if we ask everyone to be on board ;) Wednesday, August 1 @ 6 PM is good. Tom, can you put us down for that time? I’ll see ya out there foQ!

That’s probably a bad time, actually….week o’ Black Hat and DefCon for a lot of people.

Avatar Beau 13 posts

You both make good points. The next week is Black Tuesday, so that won’t fly. It seems like we might have problems with attendance if we push it to the week after that, with people trying to catch up with the stuff coming out in the first two weeks. So let’s move it up to July 25th at 6pm. I’ll do some “research” this weekend and scout out the location. I’ll update on Monday.

Avatar Shackf00 13 posts

Does Rothman know about this? I had lunch with him the other day, I’ll forward this if no one else does. I’ll be teaching @ SANS the 25th, so no Shackolicious, but dmitry can wear a T-shirt with my face on it. I know he wants one…

Avatar dmitry.chan 8 posts

Ha. If I ever show up to a meeting and you’re not there, I will instantly assume your identify and start acting like a total arse :-)

Actually, I’ll be at the Outer banks (NC) that entire week. But, the show will go on and we can catch the one in August (or September, or October, etc.). I love the location, btw. People who work in the A-T-L can just head up Ponce and grab a few pints while waiting for the perimeter to clear….

Avatar Beau 13 posts

The Brick Store said all we need to do is call them the morning of the event and they’ll make sure we’ve got a spot. I will take care of that. So it looks like we’re all set. Sorry to hear you guys are out for that date, you’ll be missed. FYI, I’ve changed my display name on here from foQ to my real first name and set a gravitar so you can all recognize me when you show up.

Avatar Andy ITGuy 6 posts

So it’s set for Aug 1 at 6:00 PM?

Avatar Beau 13 posts

No, July 25th. I think we’ll have better attendance on that date than during the Vegas Cons. Also, it doesn’t look like the gravitar thing is working, so you can go to my website if you want to see my ugly mug.

Well then all ATL bloggers put the word out. I’m posting today.

FYI, Atlanta ISSA chapter meetings are typically the last Wednesday of each month. The inaugural HotSec conflicts.

I would love to be involved but as Chris points out the the ISSA July Chapter Meeting is on the 25th of July. Is it too late to reschedule?
